However, there are many different types of approaches and methods than can be applied to understanding games or those that play games. This book provides an introduction to various game research methods that are useful to students in all levels of higher education covering both quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods. In addition, approaches using game development for research is described. Each method is described in its own chapter by a researcher with practical experience of applying the method to topic of games. Through this, the book provides an overview of research methods that enable us to better our understanding on games. </p></div>", "publisher": "ETC Press", "authors": ["Petri Lankoski", "Staffan Bjork (eds)"], "formats": [{"format": "pdf", "file_name": "Game Research Methods_ An Overv - Petri Lankoski.pdf", "dir_path": "Petri Lankoski/Game Research Methods_ An Overview (1)/", "size": 12560205}], "cover_url": "Petri Lankoski/Game Research Methods_ An Overview (1)/cover.jpg", "identifiers": [{"scheme": "isbn", "code": "9781312884748"}], "languages": ["eng"]}, "e8a87184-2a14-4176-a55a-905fc1a82fb9": {"title": "Experimental Game Design", "title_sort": "Experimental Game Design", "pubdate": "2015-06-27 07:34:42+00:00", "last_modified": "2023-07-12 14:24:55.928556+00:00", "library_uuid": "8e44672b-0671-43bb-86f6-4944e1fe4c15", "librarian": "anybody", "_id": "e8a87184-2a14-4176-a55a-905fc1a82fb9", "tags": ["research through design", "game studies and design", "game design research"], "abstract": "One way to understand games better is to experiment with their design. While experimental game design is part of most game design, this chapter focuses on ways in which it can become amethod to perform academic enquiry, eliciting deeper principles for game design. Experimental game design relies on two parts: varying design, and doing some kind of studies with it. In this chapter we limit the discussion to experiments that involve people that play the game.", "publisher": "ETC Press", "authors": ["Annika Waern", "Jon Back", "Petri Lankoski", "Staffan Bj\u00f6rk"], "formats": [{"format": "pdf", "file_name": "Experimental Game Design - Annika Waern.pdf", "dir_path": "Annika Waern/Experimental Game Design (6)/", "size": 482969}], "cover_url": "Annika Waern/Experimental Game Design (6)/cover.jpg", "identifiers": [{"scheme": "bibhash", "code": "qKP+LPI/gBqh"}], "languages": []}, "f7d8ea3b-4dca-4ada-a959-926d61f4aea9": {"title": "Ways of Drifting \u2013 5 Methods of Experimentation in Research through Design", "title_sort": "Ways of Drifting \u2013 5 Methods of Experimentation in Research through Design", "pubdate": "2014-08-27 07:15:59+00:00", "last_modified": "2023-07-12 14:24:56.067280+00:00", "library_uuid": "8e44672b-0671-43bb-86f6-4944e1fe4c15", "librarian": "anybody", "_id": "f7d8ea3b-4dca-4ada-a959-926d61f4aea9", "tags": ["design", "design research", "research through design", "methodology"], "abstract": "Design experiments are claimed to be a core means of inquiry in the research tradition of research-through-design. However, it is rarely articulated how the experiments were carried out in order to test a hypothesis, to begin a fruitful journey into unexplored design terrain or just gradually build knowledge. On the basis of the analysis of ten PhD theses we provide a typology comprised of five forms of design experiments in research-through-design. This provides a general outline of the characteristics which point to the methodological roles that design experiments
