Glosses are a separate environment in linguistic articles. They are like table but behave differently. See for example https://www.glossa-journal.org/articles/10.5334/gjgl.503/, example (3)

Glosses consists of

  • One or more "regular" lines (containing a description or the sentence without glossing)
  • Two consecutive lines that contain glossing. The words in each line are to be vertically aligned as in a table, but with different behavior. When the browser window is made narrower, both lines "flow" into a next line rather than be "squished" like a regular table.
  • One of more "regular" lines (usually containing translation)
