Maria Lai was born on September 27, 1919 in Ulassai. At the age of three, her parents decided to leave her to their uncles because of her poor health, and Maria remained with them until the age of nine. After a short return to Ulassai, she moved to Cagliari where she studied at the College with her sister Giuliana.
